How effective is HER2-targeted therapy for HER2-positive breast cancer?

HER2-positive means testing found increased HER2 activity in the cancer cells. Targeted medicines attach to or interfere with this pathway, which can slow growth and make cancer cells more visible to immune defences. The same diagnosis can behave differently from one person to another, so doctors consider tumour size, lymph nodes, hormone receptors, spread and general health when estimating benefit.

Treatment may be given around surgery to reduce the chance of remaining disease, or when cancer is advanced to shrink or control tumours. Response is followed with clinical review and appropriate tests. A stable result can represent useful control even when the tumour does not visibly shrink.

Confirm that your pathology report identifies the tumour as HER2-positive and ask how strongly the result supports targeted treatment. Discuss whether chemotherapy, hormone treatment, surgery, radiotherapy or another targeted medicine is part of the plan. Share any history of heart disease, lung disease, allergies or pregnancy, and bring a complete medicine list to each appointment.

Attend planned monitoring visits and report changes early. Fatigue, nausea, diarrhoea, rash, infusion reactions and changes in breathing or exercise tolerance can all be relevant. Your team can decide whether supportive treatment, a schedule adjustment or a different approach is needed.

Call your treatment team urgently for fever, new breathlessness, chest pain, a fast or irregular heartbeat, sudden swelling, severe weakness, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, or a rash with swelling. Emergency care is appropriate for collapse, severe breathing trouble or swelling of the mouth and throat. Prompt assessment helps distinguish treatment effects from other problems.
