Pure-tone and speech testing can show how well each ear detects and understands sound. Meniere's disease may cause fluctuating hearing, often with a low-pitched pattern early on, but hearing results vary between people and across visits. A hearing test cannot measure the inner-ear fluid directly or explain every episode of vertigo. Clinicians combine the audiogram with the timing of attacks, tinnitus, ear pressure, examination findings, and tests that help exclude other inner-ear or neurological causes.

Keep a record of vertigo episodes, hearing changes, tinnitus, ear fullness, triggers, and recovery between attacks. Tell the audiologist if sounds have recently changed or if one ear feels blocked. Repeat testing may be useful during or after a change because results can fluctuate. Bring details of medicines and previous ear or neurological assessments so the clinician can compare the pattern over time rather than relying on one appointment.

Seek urgent help for sudden hearing loss, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, severe headache, fainting, or vertigo with serious neurological symptoms. Arrange specialist review for repeated vertigo, worsening one-sided hearing, persistent tinnitus, or imbalance between attacks. Sudden changes need prompt assessment and should not be assumed to be Meniere's disease.

Ask what pattern appeared on the audiogram, whether repeat testing is needed, and which symptoms or examinations would support another diagnosis.
