How effective is a hearing test for earwax buildup?

A blockage in the ear canal can reduce the sound reaching the eardrum and cause muffled hearing, fullness, or ringing. A hearing test records how softly you respond to tones, so it can show the degree and pattern of hearing difficulty. It cannot tell from the hearing thresholds alone whether wax is responsible. A clinician needs to look into the ear with an otoscope. If wax is removed, hearing may improve and testing can be repeated to separate temporary blockage from another hearing problem.

Mention a blocked sensation, recent ear pain, discharge, dizziness, hearing changes, or previous ear surgery when booking or attending. Do not put cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects into the canal. The clinician may recommend softening drops or arrange safe removal before repeating the hearing assessment. Keep water out of a painful or draining ear unless a clinician advises otherwise. A hearing test remains useful when symptoms continue after the canal is clear.

Seek prompt medical care for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, blood or pus from the ear, new facial weakness, or intense dizziness. Arrange review for persistent one-sided hearing change, recurrent blockage, or symptoms that do not improve after wax treatment. These features should not be attributed to wax without an examination.

Ask whether wax is fully blocking the canal, whether it should be removed before testing, and when hearing should be checked again if it remains reduced.
