How effective is hand therapy for hand osteoarthritis?

Short answer
Hand therapy can reduce strain and improve hand use in osteoarthritis, although it cannot restore worn joint cartilage or remove every symptom.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Therapy focus
- Pain control, movement, strength and task adaptation.
- Underlying joint
- Therapy does not restore worn cartilage.
How therapy helps
Hand osteoarthritis can affect the thumb base, finger joints or both. A therapist may check joint movement, grip, swelling and the tasks that trigger discomfort. Treatment can include comfortable range-of-motion exercises, strengthening adjusted to irritation, a thumb or finger support, heat advice and ways to hold objects with less joint pressure. The aim is better function and symptom control, not a change to the underlying joint surface. Benefits often depend on practising a manageable home routine and adjusting it when the joint is flaring.
Making the plan useful
Bring examples of tasks that are difficult, such as opening jars, using a phone or turning a key. Practise the prescribed movements without pushing into sharp pain, and use a support during activities if advised. Alternate demanding hand tasks with lighter ones and use larger handles where possible. Keep a simple note of stiffness, pain and function so you and the therapist can decide whether the programme needs changing. Medication or an injection may also be discussed with your clinician when symptoms remain troublesome.
When to seek care
Book an assessment if pain, swelling or stiffness is interfering with sleep, work or basic self-care. Seek prompt medical advice for a suddenly hot, very swollen joint, a significant injury, new numbness or a finger that becomes difficult to move.
Questions for your doctor
Which hand joints are causing my symptoms? Would a splint help during specific tasks? What level of exercise is suitable during a flare, and when should we consider medication, injection or another treatment?
