How effective is an H. pylori breath test for Helicobacter pylori infection?

H. pylori produces an enzyme that breaks down a labelled substance after you drink it. The test measures the resulting carbon dioxide in your breath. This makes it useful for finding current infection and for checking whether treatment has cleared the bacteria. It does not detect every stomach problem, and a positive result does not by itself explain all digestive symptoms. A negative result can be less dependable if bacteria have been temporarily suppressed by recent treatment or certain medicines.

Give the testing service a complete list of medicines and mention any recent antibiotics or H. pylori treatment. You may be asked to avoid food for a period before the appointment and to pause selected medicines under clinical guidance. During the appointment, you provide a breath sample, drink the prepared solution, and provide another sample after the specified waiting period. If testing follows treatment, use the interval recommended by your clinician rather than testing immediately after finishing medicines.
