How effective is growth scan for polyhydramnios?

Polyhydramnios means there is more amniotic fluid than expected. During a growth scan, ultrasound measurements estimate your baby's size and follow growth over time. The sonographer may also assess fluid pockets, movement, position and features that could help your maternity team understand the situation.

The scan is a monitoring tool rather than a complete test. It may not reveal why fluid has increased, and an estimate of size is not the same as a direct weight measurement. Your clinician may combine the findings with your symptoms, examination, blood tests or other pregnancy checks.

Attend the appointment even if you feel well, because polyhydramnios can change as pregnancy progresses. Wear clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen and bring any questions about the report. Ask when the next scan or review is planned and which findings would change the monitoring schedule.

Follow advice about checking blood sugar, attending antenatal visits and watching fetal movements. Do not try to reduce fluid by changing your food or drink without medical guidance. Your care plan depends on the fluid level, the baby's growth and your wider pregnancy history.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, sudden breathlessness or severe abdominal swelling. These symptoms need assessment regardless of when your next scan is booked.

Ask whether the scan shows a growth pattern that needs follow-up, how the fluid is being measured, whether another test is needed, and which symptoms should prompt an urgent call. You can also ask how the findings affect your birth plan and where to contact the team outside clinic hours.
