How effective is growth scan for gestational diabetes?

Ultrasound uses measurements of the baby's body to estimate growth. In gestational diabetes, the team may pay particular attention to overall size, abdominal growth and the amount of amniotic fluid. These findings can support planning, especially when glucose readings or treatment have changed.

The scan is a snapshot and the weight is an estimate, not a direct weighing. It cannot show your current glucose level, confirm how well treatment is working by itself, or determine exactly how labour will unfold. Clinicians combine the result with glucose records, blood pressure, symptoms and other fetal assessments.

Attend the scan at the interval your maternity and diabetes teams recommend, and bring your glucose log or device information if requested. Continue the agreed meal plan, medication or insulin schedule, and testing routine unless your clinician changes it. Do not alter treatment because of an ultrasound estimate alone.

Call your maternity unit urgently for reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular contractions or severe abdominal pain. Seek prompt medical help for persistent vomiting, marked thirst with frequent urination, faintness, confusion or feeling very unwell, particularly if glucose readings are outside the range your team gave you.

Ask how the baby's abdominal measurement and fluid compare with the previous scan, whether your glucose pattern changes the monitoring schedule, and what results would lead to medication adjustment or earlier birth planning.
