How effective is growth scan for fetal growth restriction?

Ultrasound measurements of the baby's head, abdomen and thigh bone are combined to estimate weight. The clinician compares these measurements with gestational age and, when scans are repeated, looks at the pattern of growth rather than one reading alone.

The examination may also assess amniotic fluid and blood flow in the umbilical cord or other vessels. These findings help the maternity team judge how the placenta is supporting the baby and whether monitoring needs to be closer. Estimates can vary with the baby's position, the image quality and normal measurement limits.

Keep every scan and antenatal appointment so the team can compare results over time. Follow instructions about blood-pressure checks, urine testing, fetal movement awareness and any additional Doppler or heart-rate monitoring. A small measurement may reflect a naturally small baby, while a slowing growth pattern or altered blood flow may need a different plan.

Contact your maternity unit promptly if your baby's usual movements reduce or change, if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions or severe abdominal pain. Seek urgent help for a severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling or feeling very unwell, because these can accompany pregnancy complications that need assessment.

Ask which measurements were smaller, whether growth has followed its expected pattern, and whether fluid or Doppler blood flow was reassuring. You can also ask how often monitoring is planned, what movement changes should trigger a call, and which findings would lead to delivery advice.
