Zika may cause a mild illness with rash, fever, red eyes, joint pain or headache, although some people have no symptoms. The GP will ask about travel dates and locations, mosquito exposure, sexual exposure, pregnancy or plans for pregnancy, and other illnesses that can look similar. Testing is not suitable for every situation and may depend on timing and clinical advice. The consultation helps separate possible Zika from dengue or other infections and supports advice about protecting partners and an unborn baby.

Share your travel itinerary, symptom start date, pregnancy status and all medicines. Rest, drink fluids and use only pain or fever medicine that a clinician says is suitable, particularly if dengue is possible. Reduce mosquito bites while unwell and follow advice about condoms or avoiding sex. Do not donate blood during the advised restriction period. Arrange follow-up if symptoms persist or if pregnancy is possible.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, faintness, confusion, breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening illness after travel. If you are pregnant and have possible exposure or symptoms, contact a healthcare professional promptly because assessment and follow-up need additional care. New weakness, severe headache or visual symptoms also warrant urgent review.
