How effective is GP consultation for varicose veins?

The GP will ask about aching, heaviness, itching, swelling, cramps and changes that worsen after standing. They may examine the veins, skin and pulses, compare both legs and look for ulcers or inflammation. If treatment planning requires it, a vascular assessment such as an ultrasound may be arranged. A consultation can identify whether symptoms fit uncomplicated varicose veins or another problem, but it cannot remove established veins during the appointment.

Tell the GP whether one leg changed suddenly, whether the skin has broken, and whether you have had a clot or previous vein treatment. Keep moving gently, avoid sitting or standing still for long periods, and raise your legs when resting if this eases swelling. Do not start compression garments if you have concerns about circulation; ask the clinician which type is suitable. Referral depends on symptoms, examination and skin complications.

Get urgent help for sudden one-sided leg swelling, warmth, redness or pain, especially with breathlessness or chest pain. Seek prompt review for bleeding from a vein, a painful skin ulcer, spreading redness or swelling that is rapidly worsening. These signs can indicate a clot, infection or a vein complication rather than routine discomfort.
