How effective is GP consultation for transient ischaemic attack?

A transient ischaemic attack causes stroke-like symptoms that may clear, such as facial drooping, weakness or numbness on one side, speech trouble or sudden vision change. Even when the person feels normal again, the event needs prompt evaluation. A GP can record exactly what happened, review blood pressure and other health factors, check medicines and make an urgent referral. The consultation may not confirm the diagnosis because symptoms can have other causes and some tests are arranged by specialist or hospital teams.

If symptoms are happening now, call emergency services rather than arranging a routine GP appointment. Note the time symptoms began and what changed, even if they resolved. Take a medicine list and explain previous strokes, heart rhythm problems, diabetes, smoking or recent illness. Do not drive yourself. Follow any urgent assessment and prevention plan, including prescribed medicines and follow-up.

Sudden weakness, facial drooping, new confusion, trouble speaking, loss of vision, severe imbalance or a sudden severe headache requires emergency help immediately. Symptoms that improve still require urgent assessment. Do not wait to see whether they return, because the absence of symptoms at the appointment does not remove the need to investigate.
