How effective is GP consultation for a stye?

A stye is a tender, localised swelling near an eyelash or eyelid gland. During a consultation, the GP can look at the eyelid and surrounding skin, ask how quickly the swelling developed, and distinguish a stye from other causes of a lump or red eye. They may also check whether infection has spread beyond the eyelid or whether vision is affected.

Many uncomplicated styes improve with warm compresses and gentle eyelid care. A GP visit becomes more helpful when the swelling is not settling, keeps returning, affects vision, causes marked discomfort or does not look typical. Treatment depends on the findings; do not squeeze or pierce the lump yourself.

Use a clean warm compress over the closed eyelid for several minutes at a time, repeating it through the day if comfortable. Keep hands and towels clean, avoid eye makeup and contact lenses while the eyelid is irritated, and wash the eyelid gently. Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms persist, recur or make it difficult to open the eye. Take a list of eye products and medicines to the appointment.

Seek urgent medical care for pain or swelling around the eye that is rapidly worsening, fever, pain when moving the eye, reduced vision, double vision, severe headache or feeling seriously unwell. These features can indicate a problem beyond a simple stye and should not wait for routine home care.

Ask whether the lump is a stye or another eyelid problem, how long to continue warm compresses, whether any prescribed treatment is needed, and what can reduce repeated eyelid inflammation.
