How effective is GP consultation for strep throat?

The GP will ask about sudden throat pain, fever, painful swallowing, swollen neck glands and exposure to illness. They will look at your throat and may note tonsil inflammation or coating. Cough, runny nose and hoarseness can point towards a viral illness instead, although symptoms do not confirm the cause by themselves. Depending on the assessment and local practice, a throat swab or other test may be considered. The consultation also checks whether swallowing, hydration or breathing is becoming unsafe.

Drink fluids in small frequent amounts, rest, and use suitable pain relief according to the label or your clinician's advice. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine. If treatment is prescribed, take it as directed and ask what to do if you vomit or miss a dose. Hand hygiene and avoiding close contact while unwell can reduce spread. Tell the GP about allergies, pregnancy and medicines you already take.

Arrange a GP review for severe or persistent throat pain, fever with swollen glands, repeated episodes or difficulty managing fluids. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat swelling, dehydration or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Ask whether the examination suggests strep throat, whether a swab is useful, how to control pain safely, when you can return to work or school, and which warning signs require urgent review.
