How effective is GP consultation for mpox?

Mpox may cause a rash or lesions, fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes and tiredness. A GP will ask when the symptoms started, how the rash has changed, recent close contact, travel, sexual contact when relevant and any conditions or medicines that affect immunity. They may examine the skin, mouth, eyes and lymph nodes.

The appearance and stage of lesions can overlap with other infections, so testing may be arranged through the appropriate service. The consultation can also identify dehydration, severe pain, eye involvement or other reasons for escalation. Treatment is usually guided by symptoms and individual risk rather than by the consultation alone.

Call the clinic before attending and mention a new rash, fever or possible exposure. Avoid skin-to-skin contact, sexual contact, sharing towels or bedding, and close contact with people at higher risk until you receive advice. Keep lesions covered where practical, wash hands often and do not scratch or deliberately open them. Follow instructions about testing and travel to the appointment.

Seek urgent help for severe pain, trouble breathing, confusion, inability to drink, marked weakness, rapidly worsening illness, eye pain or vision change. Arrange prompt assessment for lesions near the eye, extensive mouth lesions or symptoms in someone who is pregnant, immunocompromised or very young. Tell clinicians about possible mpox before arrival so precautions can be prepared.
