How effective is GP consultation for MERS coronavirus infection?

MERS is a respiratory infection associated with the MERS coronavirus. A GP may ask about cough, fever, breathing difficulty, diarrhoea or vomiting, when symptoms started, recent travel, healthcare exposure and contact with people who may have been infected. They can assess breathing and general condition while considering other causes of respiratory illness.

Because suspected MERS can have infection-control implications, the practice may give instructions before you arrive, arrange assessment in a suitable setting or contact public-health services. Confirmation requires appropriate laboratory testing. If breathing is impaired or illness is severe, hospital care may be needed for oxygen, monitoring and supportive treatment.

Phone the clinic before attending if MERS is possible and describe symptoms and relevant exposure clearly. Follow instructions about wearing a mask, avoiding close contact and travelling to care. Do not share towels, cups or utensils while awaiting advice. Have your medicines, medical conditions, travel details and contact history ready, but do not delay urgent help to gather information.

Seek emergency care for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake or difficulty speaking in full sentences. A high fever with rapid deterioration also warrants urgent assessment. Tell emergency responders about possible MERS before arrival so appropriate precautions can be arranged.
