How effective is GP consultation for measles?

Measles can cause fever, cough, runny nose, sore or red eyes and a widespread rash. A GP may ask about the order of symptoms, vaccination history, travel, and contact with someone who was unwell. Because measles spreads readily, call the clinic before attending so staff can arrange a safer assessment. The clinician may decide whether testing or public-health advice is needed, assess hydration and breathing, and check for complications such as an ear infection or pneumonia. Consultation does not remove the virus immediately, but it helps guide safe care.

Keep the person away from school, work and crowded waiting rooms until a clinician advises that it is safe to return. Use a separate room where possible, improve ventilation and avoid contact with babies, pregnant people and anyone with reduced immunity. Encourage fluids and rest, and use only age-appropriate medicines as advised. Have vaccination details and the symptom timeline ready. Do not attend a clinic unannounced if measles is possible.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, unusual sleepiness, confusion, a seizure, severe dehydration, a stiff neck, or a child who is difficult to wake. Get prompt medical advice for a very young child, pregnancy, reduced immunity, persistent fever or worsening symptoms. Tell emergency services that measles may be present before arrival so exposure precautions can be arranged.
