How effective is GP consultation for influenza?

The GP will ask about fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches, tiredness, breathing, and how quickly symptoms developed. They may examine your chest, breathing rate, temperature, and general condition. Influenza is often assessed clinically, while testing may be considered in particular situations. The consultation helps separate uncomplicated flu from pneumonia, asthma flare-ups, dehydration, or another infection.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, and use only medicines that are suitable for you and taken as directed. Tell the GP if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, have a weakened immune system, or are caring for a young child or older adult. Depending on timing and risk, a clinician may discuss antiviral treatment or arrange review. Stay home while unwell and follow local advice about reducing spread.

Get urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, inability to keep fluids down, or a clear worsening after initial improvement. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and people with significant long-term conditions may need earlier assessment when flu symptoms begin.
