How effective is GP consultation for hiatus hernia?

Your GP will ask about heartburn, acid coming into the mouth, chest or upper-abdominal discomfort, swallowing difficulty, and symptoms after meals or when lying down. They may examine you and consider whether another problem could explain the symptoms. A consultation cannot always confirm a hiatus hernia by itself, but it can decide whether tests such as an endoscopy or imaging are appropriate and whether specialist review is needed.

Before the appointment, note when symptoms occur, foods or activities that trigger them, medicines you take, and any trouble swallowing or unexplained weight change. Your GP may suggest practical measures such as smaller meals, avoiding lying down soon after eating, and reviewing medicines that irritate the upper digestive tract. Treatment may include medicine for reflux, with follow-up to see whether symptoms settle.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent chest pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, sudden severe abdominal pain, or food becoming stuck when you swallow. These symptoms need prompt assessment because they may signal a serious problem rather than uncomplicated reflux.
