How effective is GP consultation for head lice?

Head lice are diagnosed by finding live crawling lice or viable eggs close to the scalp. Dandruff, hair-product residue, and empty egg cases can be mistaken for nits. A GP can examine the scalp, ask about household contacts and previous products, and work out whether treatment failure reflects incorrect use, reinfestation, resistance, or a different cause of itching.

The consultation can provide practical instructions about applying a product, repeating it when directed, checking close contacts, and cleaning items that touch the head. It can also assess scratching-related sores or a scalp infection.

Before the visit, note which products were used, when they were applied, whether instructions were followed, and whether live lice were seen afterward. Avoid layering treatments or using household chemicals on the scalp. Check close household contacts as advised, and use a fine-toothed comb carefully if recommended.

Arrange medical advice if live lice remain after correctly following treatment, the scalp has painful sores or spreading redness, or itching is severe and persistent.
