How effective is GP consultation for gastroenteritis?

The GP will ask about diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever, fluid intake, urine output, recent travel, food exposure, and contact with someone who was unwell. They may check your general condition and abdomen, looking for signs that the illness is more serious or that another diagnosis should be considered.

Many cases improve with supportive care. A consultation is especially helpful when vomiting prevents drinking, symptoms are prolonged, a young child or older adult is affected, or another health condition increases the risk of dehydration. Antibiotics are not suitable for every cause of gastroenteritis.

Record when symptoms began, how often you have vomited or passed loose stools, what fluids you can keep down, and whether you have seen blood. Mention recent antibiotics, travel, untreated water, shared meals, and medicines. Small, frequent sips of oral rehydration fluid may help while you arrange advice; follow local medical guidance for children.

Your GP may recommend fluids, food as tolerated, rest, and a review plan. Tests may be considered when symptoms, exposure history, or examination suggests a need to identify the cause.

Get urgent help for severe dehydration, inability to keep fluids down, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, fainting, marked drowsiness, confusion, or breathing difficulty. A very young child, frail older person, or person with significant medical problems may need earlier assessment.
