How effective is GP consultation for dry eye?

Dry eye may cause grittiness, burning, redness, watering or fluctuating vision. A GP will ask when symptoms began, whether they affect one or both eyes, and whether screens, contact lenses, medicines, air conditioning or an inflammatory condition may be contributing. They may examine the eye and eyelids, check vision concerns and decide whether community eye care or an ophthalmology review is appropriate. The consultation is useful for sorting routine irritation from problems that need a closer examination.

Before the appointment, note triggers, medicines and how often you use contact lenses. Until assessed, take screen breaks, avoid direct fan or air-conditioner airflow, keep the eyelids clean and do not rub your eyes. A clinician may suggest lubricating drops or another treatment based on the examination. Use eye products as directed and mention any product that stings or makes redness worse.

Seek urgent medical advice for severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, a sudden change in vision, significant swelling, an eye injury or chemical exposure. Contact lens wearers should seek prompt assessment for pain, redness or reduced vision because infection can affect the cornea. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are rapidly worsening.

Ask what may be causing the dryness, whether your medicines or contact lenses contribute, which drops are appropriate, and what change should prompt an eye specialist review.
