How effective is GP consultation for deep vein thrombosis?

The GP will ask about one-sided leg swelling, pain, warmth or colour change, recent surgery, travel, immobility, pregnancy, cancer, previous clots and medicines. They may examine the leg and assess the need for urgent ultrasound or hospital review. Because symptoms can overlap with muscle injury or other conditions, testing is needed before a diagnosis is made.

If DVT is suspected, seek same-day medical advice and describe when the symptoms began. Keep the affected leg comfortable while waiting for instructions, and tell the clinician about bleeding problems or medicines that affect clotting. Do not start, stop or borrow anticoagulant medicine without medical direction. Follow the testing and follow-up plan carefully.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden breathlessness, chest pain that may worsen with breathing, coughing blood, fainting or a racing heartbeat with severe illness. These can indicate that a clot has travelled to the lungs. A painful swollen leg also needs prompt assessment, even without chest symptoms.

Ask how urgently you need testing, where to go if symptoms change, whether you should travel or exercise, how bleeding risk will be managed, and when results and treatment decisions will be reviewed.
