How effective is GP consultation for conjunctivitis?

The GP will ask when redness, discharge, irritation or watering began and whether one or both eyes are affected. They may examine the eyelids and the surface of the eye, consider allergy or infection, and ask about contact lens use. This helps separate conjunctivitis from problems that need a different assessment, such as a corneal injury or inflammation inside the eye.

Share any recent cold, allergy exposure, eye injury or contact-lens use. Wash hands before and after touching the eye, avoid sharing towels, and do not wear contact lenses until advised that it is safe. Use only drops recommended for your situation; antibiotics are not useful for every cause. A GP can explain symptom relief and whether another service is more suitable.

Seek urgent medical assessment for severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, a significant injury, or swelling around the eye. Contact-lens wearers with a painful or very red eye should seek prompt advice because corneal infections need quick attention. If symptoms are not settling or keep returning, arrange a review.

Ask what cause is most likely, whether you should avoid work or school, which eye products are suitable, how long to avoid lenses, and what change would mean you need a further examination.
