How effective is genomic tumour profiling for bowel cancer?

A profile analyses genetic changes and other molecular signals in bowel tumour tissue. Depending on the panel and the clinical question, it may help identify features linked with a targeted medicine, resistance to a treatment, or an option for a clinical trial. It can also return no finding that changes available care.

The team reads the report alongside stage, tumour location, pathology, previous treatment, symptoms and overall health. A molecular finding does not establish that a medicine will work. Bowel tumours can be biologically mixed, and an older sample may not reflect disease that has changed after treatment.

Ask which genes or markers are being assessed and what decision the test may inform. When the report identifies a possible match, ask about the strength of the evidence, expected benefits, side effects and alternatives for your particular situation.

Keep the report and sample details in your records. If treatment stops working or the disease returns, discuss whether repeat profiling or a new biopsy could add information. Your oncology team should make treatment changes with you; do not act on a report alone.

Arrange a review with your oncology team when the profile is reported or when a result is being used to propose a new treatment. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal swelling, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, sudden breathlessness or fever during treatment; profiling cannot assess these urgent problems.

Ask which result could affect your plan, whether the test used the current tumour, and how a proposed medicine was matched. Ask whether the profile has implications for inherited risk or whether it describes tumour changes only.
