How effective is genetic counselling for Li-Fraumeni syndrome?

Li-Fraumeni syndrome is linked with inherited changes in TP53, a gene involved in controlling cell growth. A counsellor explains how a confirmed change may affect you and relatives, while recognising that a genetic result does not predict exactly if, when or where cancer will develop.

Counselling covers family history, the possible benefits and limits of testing, privacy considerations and the meaning of positive, negative or uncertain results. It can also help coordinate a surveillance plan with the oncology or genetics team. The value is preparation and clearer decisions; counselling does not remove inherited risk or treat an existing tumour.

Bring reports, pathology results and a three-generation family history if available. Include cancer diagnoses, approximate ages at diagnosis and the side of the family involved. The team may recommend testing an affected relative first when that is possible, because it can make interpretation more informative.

Before testing, ask how results could alter screening, treatment discussions and relatives’ options. Share the result only as you choose, but consider relatives who may benefit from professional advice. Keep a copy of the report for future clinicians.

Arrange genetics advice promptly when a clinician raises Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a TP53 result is found, or several relatives have cancers associated with the syndrome. Seek urgent medical attention for new severe symptoms such as sudden weakness, difficulty breathing or uncontrolled bleeding; genetic counselling is not an emergency service.

Ask which result is being tested, whether testing should begin with an affected relative, what surveillance is appropriate, and which family members should be offered counselling. Ask how the plan changes if the result is uncertain.
