FAP is an inherited condition linked to numerous growths in the large bowel and an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Counselling maps family history, explains inheritance, and discusses whether a known familial gene change can be tested directly. It can also explain why children and adults in the family may need age-appropriate surveillance. A counselling appointment does not diagnose polyps and cannot replace bowel examinations or specialist care.

Bring any family genetic report and details of relatives with polyps, bowel cancer, or related findings. Ask when testing should occur, how results will be shared, and which specialist will coordinate surveillance. If a familial change is confirmed, relatives can discuss targeted testing. People with a known or suspected FAP pattern should keep scheduled gastroenterology appointments because genetic information and bowel findings answer different clinical questions.

Contact your specialist promptly for rectal bleeding, persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained abdominal pain, or ongoing unintentional weight loss. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms need clinical assessment even when genetic counselling has already taken place.

Ask which familial change is suspected, who in the family should be offered testing, when surveillance should begin, and how colon and other organ checks will be coordinated. Clarify what a negative result means when the family variant is not yet known.
