Slipped capital femoral epiphysis is a problem at the growing part of the upper thigh bone near the hip. Fixation usually holds the growth plate in position with a screw so the slip does not progress. The aim is to preserve the shape and movement of the hip rather than to promise a completely normal joint.

A stable slip may allow a simpler procedure and a more predictable return of movement. An unstable or more severe slip can injure the blood supply to the femoral head, and pain, stiffness, impingement, or later joint damage may still occur. The surgeon will interpret examination and imaging findings when discussing likely function.

Follow the weight-bearing restriction exactly; crutches may be needed while the screw and bone settle. Attend follow-up visits and imaging appointments, even if pain improves, because the other hip may also need assessment during growth.

Physiotherapy commonly begins with safe hip and leg movement, then builds strength and walking control. Return to running, jumping, and sport should wait for clearance based on healing, strength, and gait. Do not adjust activity because a child feels better on a particular day.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing hip or groin pain, a new inability to bear the permitted weight, fever, wound drainage, spreading redness, or calf swelling. Sudden chest pain or breathlessness needs emergency care.

Ask which type and severity of slip is present, how long weight bearing will be restricted, how the screw will be monitored, and what symptoms could signal a blood-supply problem or a new slip in the other hip.
