How effective is fracture fixation surgery for scaphoid fracture?

The scaphoid links the two rows of wrist bones and helps the wrist transfer force. Fixation brings the fracture surfaces together and holds them with a small screw or another device while new bone forms. The fracture’s location, displacement, delay before diagnosis, bone condition and blood supply affect how healing progresses. A wrist can feel better before the fracture is strong, so symptoms alone cannot decide when protection may stop. Persistent non-healing can affect wrist mechanics and may require further specialist care.

Wear the cast or splint for the prescribed period and avoid gripping, lifting, pushing and falls onto the hand. Keep follow-up imaging appointments even when pain has settled. Move the fingers and elbow as instructed, then begin wrist motion only when the surgeon confirms that the scaphoid is sufficiently healed. Hand therapy can rebuild mobility and grip gradually. Return to climbing, contact sport or heavy work should be individually cleared.

Report increasing wrist pain, new swelling, wound drainage, fever, numbness or a splint that causes pressure. Seek urgent care for a cold or discoloured hand, inability to move the fingers, severe escalating pain, chest pain or sudden breathlessness.

Ask where the scaphoid is broken, how blood supply affects healing, what imaging will confirm union, when wrist loading can resume, and what persistent pain should prompt reassessment.
