How effective is fracture casting for scaphoid fracture?

The scaphoid is a small wrist bone that helps connect wrist movement. A cast can hold the wrist and thumb still, reducing motion across the break. Healing depends on the fracture’s location and alignment; some areas have a less direct blood supply, which can make healing slower or require a different treatment.

Pain can improve before the bone is ready for normal loading. Follow-up assessment and imaging help determine whether healing is progressing. A cast may need to stay on longer than a person expects, and returning to sport or heavy gripping too soon can stress the injury.

Wear the cast continuously as directed, keep it dry and avoid gripping, lifting or leaning on the hand. Elevate the wrist for swelling and move uncovered fingers gently if permitted. Do not remove the cast because pain has settled. Attend imaging and review appointments so activity can be increased safely.

Seek urgent help if fingers become numb, cold, blue or difficult to move, or if pain and swelling escalate. Arrange prompt review for a cracked, wet, loose or rubbing cast. Persistent wrist pain after the expected review point, or pain that returns when use increases, should be reported.

Ask where the scaphoid is broken, whether the fracture is aligned and stable, how healing will be checked, and which activities are restricted. Ask how wrist stiffness will be addressed after immobilisation.
