How effective is fracture casting for distal radius fracture?

Short answer

Fracture casting can be effective for a distal radius fracture when alignment is acceptable and remains stable during healing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What the cast protects
The wrist and distal forearm while bone healing progresses
What is monitored
Alignment, swelling, skin condition and finger circulation
Common after-effect
Temporary wrist stiffness and reduced grip

What this treatment does

The distal radius is the end of the forearm bone next to the wrist. A cast supports the wrist and forearm, limiting movement while the fracture knits. It may work well when the pieces can be positioned and kept in a useful relationship. A fracture that involves the wrist joint, is significantly displaced, or shifts after casting may need a different approach.

Swelling often changes during early healing. A splint may be used first, followed by a cast when the fit is safer. Follow-up examination and imaging help the clinician check that the wrist position is being maintained. Stiffness, reduced grip and weakness can persist after immobilisation and are addressed gradually.

Practical care while casted

Rest the arm on pillows when swelling rises, keep the cast dry, and move the fingers and elbow if those movements are permitted. Avoid lifting, pushing or using the injured hand for support. Keep review appointments, since a cast that becomes loose may no longer support the wrist properly. Later exercises should follow the plan given by your clinician.

Warning signs

Seek urgent assessment if fingers become cold, blue, pale, numb or hard to move, or if swelling and pain keep increasing. Arrange prompt review for a wet, broken, tight or rubbing cast, or for a new loss of finger movement. Severe pain out of proportion to the injury needs immediate attention.

Questions to take along

Ask whether the fracture enters the wrist joint, how stable its position is, when you can use the hand, and when repeat images are needed. Ask which finger exercises are safe and how stiffness will be managed after the cast is removed.

Questions people ask

Will a cast keep the wrist aligned?

It can, when the fracture is suitable and the position remains stable; follow-up checks are needed to confirm this.

What if my fingers swell in the cast?

Elevate the arm and seek prompt advice if swelling is marked, worsening, or accompanied by numbness, colour change or reduced movement.
