How effective is epidural steroid injection for cervical radiculopathy?

A clinician places anti-inflammatory medicine near the irritated nerve in the cervical spine, often using imaging guidance. If inflammation is contributing to pain, symptoms may settle enough to sleep, move and take part in physiotherapy. The injection is not a cure for narrowing, a disc problem or other structural pressure, and numbness or weakness may not respond like pain.

Some people notice little change, while others obtain temporary relief. Your clinician weighs the diagnosis, examination, imaging and medical history before recommending it. The procedure should be part of a broader plan that addresses posture, neck movement, strength and daily activities.

Tell the clinician about blood thinners, diabetes, infection, allergies and previous reactions to injections. Ask what medicines to pause and how to arrange transport if your neck or arm feels temporarily different afterward. Resume activity gradually, follow the written instructions and record changes in pain, sensation and strength so the next decision is informed.

Get urgent help for new or worsening arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe breathing or swallowing difficulty, or numbness spreading rapidly. Contact the treating service for fever, severe headache, increasing neck pain, or redness or drainage at the injection site.

Ask which nerve is involved, what improvement is realistic, how the injection fits with physiotherapy, and which symptoms would make another treatment necessary.
