How effective is endometrial ablation for adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows into the muscular wall. Ablation removes or destroys the lining inside the cavity, while adenomyosis can extend deeper in the wall. This difference explains why bleeding may improve even when period pain, pressure, or an enlarged tender uterus remains.

A clinician will consider the depth and location of disease, the shape of the uterine cavity, bleeding pattern, pain, age, and future pregnancy plans. Ablation is not a fertility treatment, and pregnancy after it can be dangerous. It should not be viewed as a way to remove the underlying condition.

Discuss ultrasound or other imaging, assessment of the uterine cavity, and alternatives for bleeding and pain. Tell your clinician if pregnancy is possible and explain whether you hope to become pregnant. Ask how adenomyosis severity affects the expected benefit, what happens if symptoms continue, and whether another treatment would address pain more directly. Keep a record of bleeding, clots, pain, and fatigue to support shared planning.

Seek urgent help for soaking bleeding with dizziness or fainting, severe new pelvic pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. After ablation, contact your care team for worsening pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, heavy bleeding, or feeling suddenly unwell.
