How effective is emollient therapy for cracked heels?

Short answer
Emollient therapy can soften dry, thick heel skin and support healing of uncomplicated cracks when applied regularly.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it helps cracked heels
Cracked heels form when dry, hardened skin loses flexibility and splits under pressure. An emollient coats the surface, fills tiny gaps between skin cells and helps retain moisture. With repeated use, the rim of a fissure may become less rigid, so walking and standing place less pulling force on the skin. This supports comfort and repair, but it does not remove every cause of heel cracking. Open footwear, prolonged standing, friction, eczema, psoriasis or a fungal infection can keep the skin vulnerable.
Using an emollient at home
Apply a generous layer to clean, slightly damp heels, especially after bathing and before bed. Covering the area with breathable cotton socks can reduce rubbing and help the product remain in contact with the skin. Do not aggressively cut thick skin or scrub an open fissure. Keep footwear comfortable and check the heel each day for increasing redness, warmth, swelling or drainage. Choose a product recommended for very dry skin, and stop if it causes marked burning or a new rash. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a stronger moisturising ingredient is suitable.
When to get medical advice
Arrange an assessment if a crack is deep, bleeding repeatedly, very painful, slow to improve or interfering with walking. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever or a darkening wound. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation or immune problems should have foot cracks assessed early because a small break in the skin can become harder to manage.
Questions to ask
Ask which emollient texture suits your skin, whether the fissure needs a dressing, and whether eczema, psoriasis or infection could be contributing. Also ask how to protect the heel while it heals and when a persistent crack should be rechecked.

Questions people ask
Can emollient therapy close every heel crack?
It may help uncomplicated dry cracks, but deep, infected or repeatedly reopening fissures need assessment and sometimes additional treatment.
Should I put emollient on a bleeding fissure?
Use gentle care and seek advice for a bleeding or deep fissure rather than relying on moisturiser alone.
