How effective is emollient therapy for contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis develops when skin reacts to an irritant or becomes sensitised to an allergen. The barrier can become dry, rough and cracked. An emollient coats the surface, reduces moisture loss and makes the skin more flexible, which can ease tightness and scaling.

It does not remove an allergen from the environment or switch off significant inflammation by itself. Repeated exposure can keep the rash active, even when an emollient feels soothing. Fragrance-free products are generally a sensible option for reactive skin.

Identify and avoid likely triggers with clinical guidance: detergents, solvents, metals, gloves, cosmetics or workplace substances may matter. Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, pat dry, then apply emollient promptly. Reapply after handwashing and whenever the skin feels tight.

Use protective gloves for wet work, but remove them when practical to limit sweat and take breaks. Keep the product routine simple while the rash settles. If redness, itch or swelling continues after exposure has stopped, a clinician may recommend an anti-inflammatory treatment or investigation for allergy.

Get medical advice if the rash is spreading, blistering, painful, oozing, crusted or interfering with work or sleep. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness or a rapidly widespread reaction.
