How effective is diagnostic laparoscopy for chronic pelvic pain?

A surgeon makes small openings in the abdomen and uses a camera to look at the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and nearby pelvic lining. The procedure may identify endometriosis, scar tissue, inflammation, or an ovarian or tubal problem. In some cases, treatment can be carried out during the same operation. Pain can also come from the bladder, bowel, pelvic floor muscles, nerves, or the way the nervous system processes pain; these causes may not be visible through the camera.

The result is therefore one part of an evaluation. A clear pelvic view can be useful because it rules out or makes some structural causes less likely, while directing attention to other examinations and treatments.

Ask what diagnosis the procedure is intended to investigate and whether imaging, a pelvic examination, urine testing, or other assessment should come first. Discuss the possibility of treatment during the operation, recovery expectations, and how findings would change your plan. Share previous operations, medicines, allergies, and any chance of pregnancy with the surgical team. Keep a record of pain location, timing, bleeding, bowel or bladder changes, and factors that worsen or ease symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, or a rigid or swollen abdomen. After laparoscopy, worsening pain with fever, increasing redness or discharge from an incision, breathlessness, chest pain, or difficulty passing urine needs prompt assessment.
