How effective is diabetes screening for peripheral neuropathy?

Blood tests can show whether glucose regulation is in a diabetes or prediabetes range. They do not measure how well nerves carry sensation. Peripheral neuropathy may be assessed by checking the skin, pulses, reflexes, vibration and the ability to feel light touch in the feet. Symptoms can include burning, tingling, numbness or altered balance, but some people have nerve changes without noticing them.

If screening finds raised glucose, arrange follow-up to confirm the result and discuss a foot review. Tell the clinician about numbness, pins and needles, burning pain, weakness, previous foot wounds or difficulty sensing heat and pressure. Check your feet regularly, use well-fitting footwear and avoid walking barefoot if sensation is reduced. Do not use sharp tools or very hot water to test or treat numb areas.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new foot wound, spreading redness, swelling, drainage, a blackened area or a foot that becomes unusually hot or cold. Seek urgent help for sudden weakness, rapidly worsening numbness, severe pain or new difficulty walking. These warning signs need assessment even if a glucose screening result was normal.

Ask which glucose test was used, whether it needs repeating, and whether your feet need a sensory and circulation check. You can also ask how often to review your feet, which symptoms should trigger an earlier visit, and whether another cause of nerve symptoms should be considered.
