How effective are dermal fillers for acne scars?

Fillers are most relevant to depressed or pitted scars rather than raised scars or active acne. A clinician examines whether the scar is soft enough to lift, tethered by scar tissue, or sharply edged. Treatment can improve the shadow created by an indentation, while texture, enlarged pores and colour changes may remain. A filler is placed at a carefully chosen depth, and the visible change is assessed after swelling settles.

Arrange an assessment when acne is controlled and bring details of previous procedures, allergies, medicines and any history of cold sores. Ask whether releasing tethered tissue or another resurfacing approach should come before or alongside filler. Follow the injector’s instructions about touching the area, strenuous activity and makeup after treatment. Do not judge the final appearance while bruising or swelling is still changing.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, marked warmth, drainage, skin colour change or visual symptoms after an injection. Sudden severe pain, pale or dusky skin, weakness, or any change in vision needs urgent medical attention. These signs are not expected healing effects and should not be managed by waiting at home.
