How effective is curettage and cautery for pyogenic granuloma?

Short answer

Curettage and cautery is often an effective treatment for a confirmed pyogenic granuloma, but recurrence and diagnostic review remain possible.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the treatment works

A pyogenic granuloma is a small, fragile blood-vessel growth that can bleed after minor contact. Curettage scrapes away the visible growth; cautery treats the base and helps control bleeding. The result is a healing wound rather than an instant return to normal skin. A crust, tenderness, and temporary colour change can occur. The appearance of a bleeding red lump can overlap with other skin conditions, so a clinician may send tissue for examination when the diagnosis is uncertain or the lesion behaves unexpectedly.

What to do around the procedure

Before treatment, mention pregnancy, medicines that increase bleeding, allergies to local anaesthetic, and any history of raised scars. Follow the wound-care plan closely: keep the dressing in place as directed, wash gently, and avoid pulling at the crust. Protect the healing area from knocks and sun exposure. Do not try to burn, cut, or squeeze the growth yourself. If it returns, the clinician may reassess the diagnosis and discuss another procedure. Read the Curettage And Cautery treatment guide for general procedural details.

When to seek care

Seek help if firm pressure does not stop bleeding, or if the wound develops spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, or marked swelling. Arrange review if the growth reappears, enlarges quickly, or remains an open sore. A changing or repeatedly bleeding lesion deserves reassessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how confident the diagnosis is, whether tissue will be examined, how long the wound should take to close, and what recurrence would look like. Ask which activities could disturb the site and who to contact if bleeding starts at home.

Questions people ask

Will the treated pyogenic granuloma bleed?

Some bleeding can occur during or after treatment, but cautery and correct pressure dressings are used to control it.

What if the growth comes back?

Book a review so the diagnosis and remaining tissue can be checked; further treatment may be discussed.
