How effective is curettage and cautery for corns and calluses?

Curettage gently removes layers of hardened skin. Cautery uses controlled heat to treat the selected surface and help limit bleeding. The approach may make walking or wearing shoes more comfortable when a focused thickened area is the main problem. It does not correct a tight shoe, foot deformity, altered gait, or repeated rubbing. If that trigger remains, hard skin can build again. A clinician should also distinguish a corn or callus from a wart, infection, ulcer, or another lesion before treatment.

Wear shoes with enough room for the toes and use padding recommended for the pressure point. Keep the treated site clean and dry as instructed, and do not cut, scrape, or apply strong acid products to it while it heals. Tell the clinician if you have diabetes, circulation problems, reduced sensation, or a history of slow wound healing. A follow-up can check the skin and address the mechanical cause rather than repeatedly removing the thickening alone.

Seek review if the wound becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or draining, or if redness spreads beyond the treated area. Get prompt assessment for a dark area, bleeding, an open sore, numbness, or difficulty bearing weight. People with diabetes or reduced foot sensation should use a lower threshold for contacting their care team after a foot procedure.

Ask what is causing the pressure, whether footwear or an orthotic could help, how to dress the site, and what signs would show that the diagnosis needs reconsideration.
