How effective is cryotherapy for warts?

A clinician applies extreme cold to the wart, creating a controlled injury that makes the abnormal tissue shed as the skin heals. A blister, tenderness, redness, or temporary swelling can follow. Warts on thicker skin, such as the sole, may be more resistant because pressure and depth can hide affected tissue. New warts can also appear because freezing removes a visible lesion but does not guarantee that the virus will not persist in nearby skin.

Tell the clinician about diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, immune problems, or medicines that affect healing. Keep the area clean, avoid picking a blister or scab, and follow the dressing instructions. Wear comfortable footwear when a treated wart is on the foot. Do not share towels, nail tools, or footwear, and avoid shaving across the lesion. A review can show whether another session or a different approach is appropriate.

Contact a clinician if pain is worsening rather than settling, redness is spreading, the area becomes hot, pus develops, or you feel unwell. Arrange assessment promptly for a wart that bleeds without being rubbed, changes appearance, or has not been confidently diagnosed. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, loss of feeling, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
