How effective is cryotherapy for genital warts?

Freezing damages the wart tissue so it can blister, crust, and detach during healing. Results depend on wart size, number, thickness, and location. New warts may appear because treatment removes visible growth rather than reliably clearing HPV from the skin. A clinician may recommend observation, prescription treatment, or another procedure when freezing is uncomfortable, impractical, or not giving the expected response.

Keep the treated area gently clean and follow the wound-care advice you receive. Avoid picking, friction, and sexual contact until the skin has healed as advised. Attend follow-up so remaining or returning warts can be assessed. Discuss testing for other sexually transmitted infections and tell partners that treatment does not establish when HPV was acquired.

Contact the clinic for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or difficulty passing urine. Seek assessment for bleeding, ulceration, a rapidly changing growth, or a wart-like lesion that does not respond, because not every genital growth is a wart.

Ask how many sessions may be needed, when sexual activity can resume, how recurrence will be monitored, and whether another diagnosis or treatment should be considered.
