How effective is cryotherapy for Bowen's disease?

Bowen’s disease is an early form of squamous cell carcinoma confined to the outer skin layer. Freezing destroys the treated surface tissue; the area may blister, crust, and take time to settle. Cryotherapy is less straightforward when a patch is thick, large, recurrent, close to a sensitive structure, or difficult to outline. A persistent lesion may require another treatment or tissue sampling rather than repeated freezing without review.

Follow wound-care instructions, keep the site clean, and avoid removing the crust yourself. Protect the area from sun while it heals and attend the planned examination. Ask how the clinician will confirm that the lesion has cleared and whether nearby sun-damaged skin also needs assessment. Keep a record of any new growth, bleeding, or change in texture.

Call the treating service if swelling, pain, warmth, pus, or spreading redness worsens. Arrange prompt review for a lesion that continues to thicken, bleeds, ulcerates, expands, or fails to heal. These findings do not prove invasion, but they make a direct clinical assessment important.
