How effective is cortisone injection for hip impingement?

A cortisone injection may reduce hip pain from irritated tissues and can sometimes clarify whether the joint is the pain source, but it does not reshape the hip bones. Relief may create a window for physiotherapy and movement retraining. The result varies, and ongoing pinching, weakness, or restricted movement needs a broader treatment plan.

Hip impingement occurs when hip movement brings the ball and socket into contact in a way that irritates the joint or nearby labrum. An injection places anti-inflammatory medicine in or around the joint, depending on the suspected source. It may calm irritation, but it cannot change the shape that contributes to contact. A response can support the clinical assessment, while no response does not by itself explain every possible cause of hip pain.

Your clinician may review movement, strength, imaging, and activities such as deep squats, twisting, or prolonged sitting. Follow instructions about activity after the injection, then use any pain reduction to practise prescribed hip control and strength work. Avoid repeatedly forcing painful end-range positions. Record which movements improve and whether walking, stairs, or sleep become easier.

Seek prompt advice for increasing redness, heat, swelling, or pain at the injection site, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Get urgent assessment for inability to bear weight, a fall, sudden leg weakness, new numbness, or a cold or pale foot. Arrange follow-up if groin pain, catching, or reduced movement continues or worsens.

Ask whether the injection is intended for diagnosis, symptom relief, or both; where it will be placed; and what activity limits apply afterward. Discuss physiotherapy goals, alternatives, signs of a different pain source, and how persistent symptoms would affect future treatment decisions.
