How effective is cortisone injection for bursitis?

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion that helps tissues glide. Repeated pressure, friction, injury, inflammatory disease, or infection can make it painful and swollen. Steroid medicine may settle non-infectious inflammation around a selected bursa, sometimes making movement and rehabilitation easier.

The injection will not remove ongoing pressure from kneeling, leaning, repetitive activity, or poor movement habits. It is not appropriate for every swollen bursa, especially when infection is suspected. A clinician may examine the area and decide whether fluid testing, imaging, rest, or another treatment is needed first.

Identify which bursa is involved and ask what triggered the irritation. Reduce the activity that presses on it, use cushioning where relevant, and follow advice on gentle movement. Tell the clinician about fever, skin breaks, diabetes, immune problems, blood-thinning medicines, allergies, and prior injections. Resume the provoking activity only in stages after symptoms settle.

Seek prompt assessment for a hot, red, rapidly enlarging swelling, drainage, fever, chills, or feeling unwell, because infection needs different treatment. After an injection, contact the clinic if pain or swelling keeps worsening. Urgent care is appropriate for severe pain with sudden loss of movement or new weakness.
