How effective is cone biopsy for cervical dysplasia?

Cervical dysplasia means abnormal cells on the cervix; it is not the same as invasive cervical cancer. During a cone biopsy, a surgeon removes a cone-shaped section containing the abnormal area. A laboratory examines the tissue to confirm the grade of dysplasia and whether the edges of the removed piece are clear.

This gives the care team more information than a small sample and may treat the abnormal area at the same time. Dysplasia can recur or remain, so a reassuring result does not replace surveillance. The amount of tissue removed and the location of the lesion can matter for future pregnancy discussions.

Ask which medicines to pause, what anaesthesia is planned, and whether you need someone to take you home. Afterward, follow instructions about rest, vaginal products, intercourse, swimming, and lifting. Watery or blood-stained discharge can occur, but the team should explain what is expected for your procedure.

Keep the pathology and follow-up appointments. Ask when cervical testing is due and what the result means for further treatment. Tell the clinician if pregnancy is possible or if preserving future pregnancy options is a priority.

Contact the surgical team urgently for heavy bleeding, faintness, fever, worsening pelvic pain, or discharge with a strong unpleasant smell. Seek emergency care if bleeding makes you feel weak or you cannot reach the treating service. New symptoms after recovery also deserve assessment rather than being assumed to be normal.
