How effective is cone biopsy for cervical cancer?

A cone biopsy, also called conisation, removes a cone-shaped section from the cervix. The laboratory examines its depth, edges, and cell changes. This can clarify a result when a smaller biopsy is insufficient and can help determine whether an early lesion has been fully removed.

It is not suitable as the sole treatment for every cervical cancer. The decision depends on the tissue diagnosis, the size and position of the abnormality, the margins, and whether there is evidence of disease beyond the cervix. Further treatment or surveillance may be advised after the report.

Tell the surgical team about pregnancy plans, medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, and previous cervical treatment. Follow instructions about fasting and recovery. Arrange the planned results appointment, because the pathology report determines whether the edges are clear and whether more care is needed.

Some bleeding and cramps can occur after cone biopsy. Contact your care team for bleeding that is heavy or increasing, fever, foul-smelling discharge, worsening pelvic pain, or feeling faint. Seek urgent help if severe pain or bleeding causes weakness or collapse.

Ask what the pathology found, whether the margins are clear, whether the sample shows invasive disease, and whether follow-up or further treatment is recommended. If pregnancy matters to you, ask how the depth of tissue removal may affect future pregnancy care and when it is safe to try.
