How effective is bowel resection for bowel cancer?

During a resection, the surgeon removes the part of the bowel containing the cancer and examines nearby tissue and lymph nodes. The two healthy ends may be joined, or a stoma may be needed temporarily or longer term. The laboratory findings help the team understand whether cancer has reached the bowel wall or lymph nodes and whether further treatment should be considered.

Surgery may aim to remove cancer that is confined to the bowel, prevent or relieve blockage, or manage a tumour that has spread in a way that remains operable. Recovery and bowel function vary with the operation, your health, and whether chemotherapy or another treatment is also needed.

Your surgical team can explain the planned operation, possible stoma, anaesthesia, hospital stay, wound care, eating plan, and activity restrictions. Before surgery, share all medicines and health conditions. Afterward, follow instructions for walking, hydration, pain relief, and bowel changes. A stoma nurse can teach pouch care if a stoma is part of your recovery.

After surgery, contact your team for fever, increasing abdominal pain or swelling, repeated vomiting, a wound that becomes red or drains, or a sudden change in stoma output. Emergency help is needed for severe pain, fainting, breathing difficulty, or signs of heavy bleeding. Keep follow-up appointments so the pathology report and next treatment decisions are reviewed.
