How effective is CO2 laser resurfacing for xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma consists of yellowish cholesterol-rich deposits in or beneath the eyelid skin. A CO2 laser can remove or smooth targeted superficial tissue, improving the contour and colour contrast. The result depends on deposit depth, size, eyelid anatomy, and how the skin heals. Laser treatment does not correct any underlying lipid abnormality and does not guarantee that deposits will not return. Redness, swelling, crusting, scarring, and lighter or darker skin are possible during or after healing.

Ask a dermatologist or appropriately trained eyelid specialist to confirm the diagnosis and assess the deposit depth. Discuss whether medical evaluation of cholesterol or other health factors is appropriate, alongside cosmetic treatment. Review alternatives and the trade-off between removing more tissue and increasing healing risk. Protect the eye during treatment and follow instructions for cleansing, ointment, sun avoidance, and makeup. Never pick the healing surface, because trauma can worsen scarring or pigment change.

Contact the clinic if swelling, pain, warmth, redness, or drainage is worsening. Seek urgent eye care for vision changes, severe eye pain, new double vision, or trouble closing the eye. Have a changing, bleeding, ulcerated, or unexpectedly firm eyelid lesion assessed promptly rather than treating it as known xanthelasma.

Ask whether the deposits are superficial, how close they are to the eyelid margin, what result is realistic, how recurrence will be monitored, and which eye symptoms after treatment require urgent review.
