How effective is child health consultation for respiratory syncytial virus infection?

The clinician listens to the chest, observes breathing effort, checks oxygenation when appropriate, and asks about feeding, wet nappies, fever and alertness. They consider age, prematurity and existing heart or lung problems because these can change how closely a child should be monitored.

Most care focuses on clearing the nose, maintaining fluids and watching breathing. A consultation is useful because symptoms can change over the course of an infection; the clinician can explain which changes are manageable at home and which require prompt reassessment.
