How effective is child health consultation for febrile seizures?

Febrile seizures are convulsions linked with a rise in temperature, usually during an illness. The clinician will ask what happened before, during and after the event, including how long it lasted, which parts of the body moved, and whether your child returned to their usual behaviour. They may examine breathing, hydration, temperature and possible sources of infection. This helps separate a typical fever-related event from signs that need a different assessment.

The consultation cannot predict every future event or remove the illness causing the fever. Its value is careful assessment, clear safety advice and a plan suited to your child's age and history.

Place your child on their side on a safe, flat surface, move nearby objects away and watch the time. Do not restrain the movements and do not put food, drink or medicine in the mouth during the seizure. Afterward, offer comfort and follow the clinician's instructions for fever care and fluids when your child is fully alert. Record the temperature, other symptoms and recovery so the clinician can review the episode accurately.

Take the consultation's written plan with you if another event occurs. Ask whether your child needs follow-up, tests or a medicine plan based on the particular episode.

Seek emergency help if the seizure continues, happens again without recovery, affects breathing, occurs with a stiff neck, or your child remains unusually sleepy or difficult to wake. Get prompt medical assessment for a first seizure, an injury, persistent vomiting, signs of dehydration or a child who looks seriously unwell. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these warning signs are present.
